THE NIGHT SKY, WITH ITS AMAZING ARRAY OF STARS AND OTHER ASTRONOMICAL WONDERS, IS SLOWLY DISAPPEARING DUE TO AN INCREASE OF LIGHT POLLUTION FROM URBAN SPRAWL
Fortunately Australia has some of the darkest skies on Earth and we need to take advantage of them before we lose our views of the sky forever Light pollution also has an effect on our wildlife, disturbing nocturnal patterns of many native animals By preserving our night skies we are also helping to preserve our native wildlife |
WOULD YOU LIKE TO KNOW WHERE THE BEST PLACES ARE TO SEE THE STARS?
Recognised Australian Dark Sky Sites are a Nationwide network of locations that provide great views of the night sky and which are accessible to everyone. They have been nominated by local groups, organisations, or towns as ideal Dark Sky sites to see the stars.
The list of Recognised locations allows you to be sure that you will actually be in a Dark Sky location without having to travel into Australia's outback or far away country towns in search of suitable dark sites. You can be confident that each site, by being recognised by its darkness level, is the best in your area to see the night sky for Astronomical Observations or Astrophotography.
Recognised Australian Dark Sky Locations are listed in 3 levels:
BRONZE - Good Dark Sky - suitable for general Observing
SILVER - Very Good Dark Sky - suitable for deeper Observing
GOLD - Excellent Dark Sky - suitable for Deep Sky Observing and Astrophotography
